Website migration SEO (because rankings don't pack themselves).

A new domain, platform or URL structure puts every ranking you have at risk at once. Our website migration SEO lists every address that earns, maps each one to its new home, and watches the move until the numbers settle.

What is included

A move is safer when every address has somewhere to go.

4 rules for the search side of a domain, platform or structure change. They apply whoever does the build.

  1. Each URL that ranks, gets visits or carries links goes to its closest new match. None get swept to the homepage.

    How a build runs
  2. Rankings, traffic and index size are recorded before the switch. The weeks after can then be read against hard numbers.

    See the work
  3. Staging noindex removed, canonicals on the new address, sitemaps submitted, tracking firing. We check it within the hour, not the week.

    The proof we show
  4. Large sites move a section at a time where the build allows. A problem then shows up in one section instead of everywhere.

How it runs

From first call to launch, minus the headaches.

You see the page plan before design starts, and the design before we build. So there are no nasty surprises at the end.

Before the build

Inventory

We gather every address the old site answers on, from a crawl, the server logs, analytics and inbound links. Then we rank them by what they earn.

What we deliver

  • Full crawl of the old site
  • URLs from logs and analytics
  • Inbound links by URL
  • Pages ranked by value

Before the build

Baseline

We write down where the site stands before anything moves. The migration gets measured instead of argued about.

What we deliver

  • Rankings snapshot
  • Traffic by landing page
  • Index size recorded
  • Conversion baseline
A crowd of people crossing a busy city street, shot from above with their movement blurred

During the build

Mapping

Every old address is matched to its closest new one. The few with no match are retired on purpose instead of by accident.

What we deliver

  • One-to-one redirect map
  • Retire and merge calls
  • Chains and loops removed
  • Map tested on staging

Launch week

Launch

We run a checklist in the launch hour, whoever built the site. Redirects go live, staging blocks come off, sitemaps go in and tracking fires.

What we deliver

  • Launch hour checklist
  • Redirects checked live
  • Sitemaps and change of address
  • Tracking confirmed

After launch

Monitor

We compare the new site with the baseline every week. Any drop is traced to the address that caused it while it is still small.

What we deliver

  • Weekly baseline comparison
  • Error and 404 watch
  • Drops traced to URLs
  • Close-out report

The long read

What a website migration puts at risk, and how to keep it.

The build is the part everyone plans. The search side decides whether the new site starts where the old one left off.

A well-run move still dips, briefly

Even a careful migration asks Google to relearn the site, and a short dip is normal while it does.

What matters is the shape. A mapped move usually dips a little and recovers within weeks. An unmapped one can fall and keep falling.

The baseline is how you tell the 2 apart early enough to act.

Search traffic after a mapped move
Traffic against baseline Below baseline

Illustrative: the usual shape of a mapped migration, not a measurement or a promise for your site.

The long tail is where moves go wrong

The homepage and the main services always get redirected. The losses are in the addresses nobody remembers, like an old campaign page, a PDF, or a blog post from years ago that still earns links.

Those don't appear in the menu, so they only turn up in the logs, the analytics and the backlink data. That is where our inventory starts.

Migration SEO is the search side of the move

If we are redesigning your site, this work is already inside the redesign. If you are moving an online store, the products, customers and orders are a platform migration.

This service is the search side of any move, including one your own developer or another agency is building. We supply the map and the checklist, and they build to it.

Call before the build, not after the drop

The inventory is easiest while the old site is still there to crawl. So start before the build does.

If the move has already happened and traffic has fallen, it is often recoverable. The old addresses can be rebuilt from logs, archives and backlink data, and redirected late instead of never.

Questions

What people ask before a website migration.

What you need to know before we start a conversation.

Not answered here? Ask us directly

Will we lose rankings when we change domain?

A short dip is normal while Google relearns the site, and nobody can honestly promise zero movement. We redirect every earning URL, file the change of address and keep the old domain live. The aim is a quick return to your baseline, and the weekly checks show if anything slips.

Another agency is building our new site. Can you still help?

Yes, and it's a common setup. We supply the URL inventory, the redirect map and the launch checklist. Then we work with their developer on staging and watch the numbers after launch. They build the site, and we look after the search side of the move.

How is this different from a redesign or a platform migration?

A website redesign with us already includes this work. An ecommerce platform migration moves products, customers and orders to a new store. Website migration SEO is the search side of any move, whoever builds the new site. It fits best when another team owns the build.

When should we bring you in?

Before the build starts, ideally. The inventory and baseline need the old site live, and the redirect map shapes decisions about the new URL structure. Bring us in late and we can still help, but some of the groundwork has to be rebuilt from logs and archives.

We've already migrated and traffic dropped. Is it too late?

It is usually recoverable. We rebuild the list of old addresses from server logs, web archives and link data. Then we find the ones that lost their traffic and redirect them to the right new pages. The sooner we start, the more of the lost traffic tends to come back.

How much does website migration SEO cost?

You get a fixed quote with line items after a free 15-minute call. The price depends on the size of the site and the kind of move. A domain move costs more than a structure change, because there is more to file, contact and watch.

Do healthcare sites need anything extra in a move?

Practitioner and location pages often carry the most search value, and patient booking links break easily in a move. Both get their own lines in the inventory and the launch checklist. Links into booking systems like HotDoc, Halaxy and Cliniko are tested on staging before the switch.
