Brand messaging your whole team can say in one breath

Brand messaging is the one thing your business promises, the proof that backs it and the voice you say it in. We write it down in a short guide. After that, every page, ad and article has something to write from.

What is included

One promise, said the same way everywhere (even by the new hire).

The messaging follows 4 rules, so it survives a busy team and a brand new writer.

  1. The promise is one sentence, specific enough that a competitor couldn't put their name to it.

    How a build runs
  2. Every message pillar is held up by something you can show a buyer. A word you'd like them to believe doesn't count.

    See the work
  3. The tone of voice is written as rules with examples, so a new writer can follow it on their first day.

    The proof we show
  4. The site, the ads and the articles all start from the same message house, so the business sounds like one business.

How it runs

From first call to launch, minus the headaches.

You see the page plan before design starts, and the design before we build. So there are no nasty surprises at the end.

Step 1

Listening

We interview the owners, the team and a handful of customers. Then we read how you describe yourselves today, on every channel.

What we deliver

  • Owner and team interviews
  • Customer conversations
  • Current messaging audit
  • Fixed quote with line items
A business owner laughing during a video strategy call on his laptop, in a light-filled room with a window behind him

Step 2

Positioning

We work out who you're for and what you do that others in your market don't. We also pin down what you'd rather not be known for.

What we deliver

  • Who you are for
  • What sets you apart
  • Competitor messaging map
  • Positioning statement
A crowd of people crossing a busy city street, shot from above with their movement blurred

Step 3

Message house

The promise sits at the top, with 3 pillars under it and the proof that holds each one up. It's all written as sentences you can use.

What we deliver

  • One-line promise
  • Three message pillars
  • Proof points for each
  • Audience variations
Three colleagues around a table of laptops, one standing and gesturing at a screen while the other two look on

Step 4

Tone of voice

How the business sounds, set out as rules with before and after examples. It comes with the words you use and the ones you avoid.

What we deliver

  • Voice principles
  • Before and after examples
  • Word list, use and avoid
  • Channel notes
Blue and lime patch cables plugged into a rack panel and sweeping away in order

Step 5

Rollout

We walk your team through it and rewrite your homepage hero as the first proof it works. Then we hand over a guide people will open.

What we deliver

  • Team walkthrough
  • Homepage hero rewritten
  • Message guide handed over
  • Brief template for writers

The long read

What brand messaging is, and what it isn't.

Messaging means a workshop to some people and a logo to others. On our projects it means a short document the whole site gets written from.

Most businesses describe themselves 6 different ways

Put a business's homepage, ads, quotes and social posts side by side. Each one usually describes a slightly different business.

None of them is wrong. Different people wrote them on different days, with nothing shared to write from.

A message house is that shared thing: one promise, 3 reasons to believe it, and a voice to say it in.

How often each channel states the core promise
States the promise Says something else

Illustrative: the pattern we tend to see in a messaging audit, not a measurement. Yours is audited before anything is written.

A promise has to be able to lose

Caring, quality service is a slogan every competitor would sign. If nobody could disagree with it, it isn't doing any work.

A strong promise rules something out. It says who you're for, and so who you're not for. That's what makes people believe it.

Why AI can't pick your message for you

AI will happily write you a promise, a tagline and 3 values in 10 seconds. They'll sound great, and they'll fit every business in your street.

A message has to come from what your customers say and what you can prove. That takes interviews and a few hard choices. AI is handy once the choices are made, and the tone of voice guide tells it how to sound.

What comes after the messaging

Messaging on its own changes nothing a buyer sees. Website copywriting is usually the first job that uses it, and the homepage hero we rewrite at the end shows it working.

Service page copy, SEO content and blog writing all start from the same message house. That's why we suggest doing this first when a site is being rebuilt.

Tell us what you promise. We'll tell you straight if it lands.

  • A voice your team can use

Questions

Brand messaging questions, answered straight.

What you need to know before we start a conversation.

Not answered here? Ask us directly

Is brand messaging the same as branding?

Branding usually means the logo, colours and type. Messaging is what the business says and how it says it. We do the words, and they sit comfortably beside the visual identity you already have.

Do we need a workshop?

A short one at most. We interview the owners and team, speak to a few customers and bring back a draft to react to. Reacting to a draft is faster than inventing one in a room.

How long does it take?

It depends mostly on how fast we can book the interviews. You'll get a timeline with your fixed quote, before anything starts.

What does brand messaging cost?

You get a fixed quote with line items after a free 15-minute call. Customer interviews are part of the quote, and nothing is billed by the hour.

Will brand messaging help our Google rankings?

Indirectly. Messaging decides the words your pages use, and pages written in your customers' words tend to match what they search. The copy that follows is where search gets worked in directly.

We're a healthcare business. Are there limits on what we can promise?

Yes. Our copywriters write your promise and proof points to the AHPRA and TGA guidelines. You stay responsible for your advertising. Written to the guidelines by our copywriting team. Not legal advice.

What do we actually get?

A short message guide with the promise, the pillars and their proof, audience versions and the tone of voice with examples. It's written to be used, so it stays short.
